Roberto Mollá‘s new work for PULSE New York 2010 draws inspiration from the ancient Japanese tale of the famous pearl diver Princess Tamatori. Her story gives structure to the artist’s drawings, which feature visual references ranging from naturalist Ernst Haeckel’s drawings of mollusks to the works of Dada artist Francis Picabia, Russian Suprematist El Lissitsky and the Italian Futurists as well as the modular designs of Manuel Barbadillo. Mollá deftly assembles his cast of characters and icons in a space at once fluid and bound by the geometry of the graph paper, a flatland in shades of red, black and gold.
